A private South Island homeowner needed a removable flood-protection option configured for their property. Special Solutions prepared and supplied a custom FloodShield aluminium barrier system for the agreed opening.

This project follows the work from component preparation through to the supplied barrier shown in place. The installation photographs show the removable system spanning the property’s driveway.

Residential flood protection starts with the opening

A removable aluminium flood barrier is not selected by width alone. The clear opening, proposed barrier height, surrounding walls, threshold, fixing locations and expected water conditions all affect the proposed configuration. Access and storage also matter because the panels need to be available and practical to deploy before severe weather arrives.

For this South Island residential project, the FloodShield components were measured, checked and prepared before supply. Keeping the customer and exact location private does not change the useful lesson: a home flood barrier should be matched to the opening rather than treated as a generic item taken straight from a box.

Preparing the FloodShield aluminium barrier

Allan McLean worked through the aluminium profiles and associated components, including drilling, assembly checks and the application of high-visibility markings to selected parts. This preparation helps confirm that the supplied components correspond with the agreed barrier layout.

The supplied barrier in place

The completed system is shown installed across the driveway at the South Island property. Removable aluminium panels span between the end and intermediate posts, while red-and-white visibility markings make the barrier easier to identify when it is deployed.

Why a removable barrier can suit a home

FloodShield uses removable aluminium panels that fit between prepared posts. When flooding is not expected, the panels can be removed and stored so the doorway, garage or other suitable opening remains accessible. When severe weather is forecast, the specified components are fitted according to the supplied instructions.

That can make a removable system useful for some residential openings, but the barrier is only one part of property-level flood planning. Water may also enter through other doors, vents, drains, wall materials or services. The supporting structure and sealing surfaces need to be suitable, and safe access and an exit route must be considered.
