Flood Barrier FAQs NZ | Flood Protection Advice

Practical answers about choosing, ordering, setting up and looking after flood barriers. Know what you need? Ask for a price. Need help comparing options? We can discuss those with you.

Buying & working with us

Can I just ask for a price or order a product?

Yes. If you know the product, size and quantity you need, send those details and your delivery location. You do not need to arrange a site visit simply to ask for a price. If you are unsure which system to choose, we can discuss the options with you.

What information helps you suggest a suitable option?

Your location, opening width or proposed barrier length, photographs, ground surface and any known flood history are a useful starting point. Include the direction water approaches from, previous water depth and nearby drains or low points. Final measurements and installation details may still need checking before an order.

Do you supply throughout New Zealand?

Yes. We supply nationwide. Freight, delivery access, lead time and any unloading requirements are confirmed for the order.

Where do you offer installation and site visits?

Local installation and site visits are available by arrangement in the wider Manawatū–Whanganui region. Elsewhere, we can work through the requirements with you and your installer. A photograph-based discussion is not the same as an on-site inspection or engineering assessment.

Do you work with businesses, councils and contractors?

Yes. Tell us the location, intended use, required quantities and any procurement or technical documentation requirements. We can discuss the proposed supply and identify what supporting information is available for the selected system.

What affects the price and delivery time?

Product type, dimensions, quantities, corners, posts, supports, finish and freight can all affect price. Installation and surface preparation may be separate. Ask us to confirm current availability, delivery estimates, GST treatment and what is included in the quotation before ordering.

Can I get a sample or demonstration?

Ask us what is available for the product you are considering. Sample supply, demonstrations and associated costs are agreed individually; not every product is held locally.

Choosing a system

What is the main difference between the four product ranges?

FloodShield uses removable aluminium panels in prepared posts for suitable openings. FloodBloc Wall uses interconnecting rigid ABS sections for temporary diversion or containment. FloodLine Series Pro is a compact water-filled barrier for suitable shorter runs and shallow surface-water situations. FloodLine XL is a larger water-filled system requiring more planning for filling, handling and the barrier layout. Suitability depends on the site and proposed flood conditions.

Is the tallest or heaviest barrier always the best choice?

No. Opening width, water depth, flow, ground condition, fixing points, deployment time and safe access all matter. A larger barrier can also require more water, handling space, stronger fixings or additional support.

Does the product height tell me how deep the water can be?

Not by itself. Overall product height and the suitable retained-water depth are different specifications. Ask for the operating limits and documentation relevant to the model, span, supports and installation being proposed.

Will a barrier keep the whole building completely dry?

No barrier can promise that for every site or event. Water may seep beneath or around a barrier, enter through walls, vents or drains, or rise above it. Consider all entry routes and how any residual water will be managed.

Can a barrier work on grass, gravel, slopes or uneven paving?

There is no single answer across the range. Gaps affect sealing; soft or sloping ground can affect stability. Tell us about the full barrier line, not just the opening. Ground preparation, a different layout or another system may be needed.

Can I mix products or join different models?

Only where the connection and overall layout are confirmed as suitable. Do not assume that different heights, brands or product types seal together. Ends, corners and transitions need as much attention as the straight run.

Questions about each product

Does FloodShield need permanent building work?

It needs prepared fixing points for its posts and, where specified, intermediate posts or base plates. The panels are removable. Initial installation and later flood deployment are separate tasks. See FloodShield mounting and sizing information.

Can I add more FloodShield panels later to increase the height?

Do not increase the agreed height without checking the complete design. The posts, span, fixings, supporting structure and braces must suit the proposed loading; extra panels alone do not establish a higher protection rating.

Does FloodBloc Wall need filling with water?

No. It uses rigid interconnecting ABS sections rather than a water-filled tube. The arrangement still needs suitable ground, correctly connected sections and properly planned ends and corners. See the FloodBloc Wall range.

What is the FloodBloc fin option?

It is a separate design incorporating a flexible ground skirt. It is quoted and selected separately from the standard wall. The skirt does not remove the need to assess the ground and expected flood conditions.

Are FloodLine Series Pro and FloodLine XL filled with air or water?

The FloodLine systems described on our pages use water for deployment weight. Follow the supplied filling procedure for the selected model; do not assume that an air-filled shape is ready for use. Explore Series Pro or FloodLine XL.

What should I check before choosing Series Pro?

Check the full opening width, the route water may take around the ends, the ground surface and the expected water depth and flow. Choose a length and layout that address those routes. It is not a substitute for a larger system where the expected conditions exceed its intended use.

What extra planning does FloodLine XL need?

Confirm the water source, filling equipment, water volume, realistic fill time, crew, access, storage and drainage arrangements. Larger filled barriers are very heavy. Any joining, restraint, skirt placement or anchoring requirements must be confirmed for the selected model and site.

Preparing & deploying

How long will deployment take?

It depends on the system, quantity, access, crew experience, surface preparation and—in water-filled systems—the available filling rate. Time a practice deployment at your property. Do not rely on a generic promise of a fixed number of minutes.

When should I put the barrier in place?

Plan to deploy early, before floodwater arrives, while the work can be done safely. Keep the equipment accessible and decide who will act if you are away. Never enter floodwater to install or adjust a barrier.

Can I move a water-filled barrier into position?

Position it in accordance with the supplied instructions before filling. Do not plan to drag or lift a filled tube: the water adds substantial weight and moving it may damage the barrier or cause injury.

What should I check in a practice setup?

Check that every component is present, seals and valves are sound, the layout fits, and everyone understands their role. Confirm any tools, pumps, hoses, power and water supply needed. Keep a safe exit route and allow time for unexpected problems.

Does a barrier mean we can stay during an evacuation?

No. Follow Civil Defence and emergency-service instructions, and leave if you feel unsafe. A barrier does not make it safe to remain in a threatened building. For emergency preparation, see Get Ready’s flood guidance.

How should FloodLine XL be anchored?

Use the designated D-rings or grommets for suitable anchors, ropes or restraints rather than relying only on the sleeves that join barrier sections. Restraint may be needed at regular intervals, with extra attention near the ends, at section connections and in areas exposed to greater water pressure. Straps should prevent movement without excessively compressing the tube.

The front skirt should be fully extended, flat and in continuous contact with the ground. On grass or soil, suitable stakes or anchors may be used. On concrete or asphalt, the site may require ballast, an approved temporary fixing system or mechanical anchoring where drilling is permitted.

Can FloodLine XL be used on slopes or uneven ground?

Single-pipe flexible barriers are best suited to flat or gently sloping ground. Steeper slopes, rapid currents, saturated soil, unstable ground or highly uneven surfaces require a site-specific assessment and may need additional restraint, a multi-pipe configuration or a different system. The supplied guidance does not give one generic maximum slope angle or flow velocity for every installation.

Care, warranty & documentation

How do I clean and store a barrier after use?

Wait until it is safe, follow the product instructions and take care around contaminated floodwater. Clean off debris, drain water-filled systems and let components dry. Store them protected from damage, with seals, fittings and accessories kept together and ready for the next use.

What if a seal, valve, panel or connector is damaged?

Inspect before reuse and contact us with the product details and clear photographs. Ask about compatible replacement parts or an approved repair. Do not assume that an improvised patch or substitute component will preserve performance.

What warranty applies, and how do I report a problem?

Ask us to confirm the warranty terms supplied with your product and quotation. To report a problem, contact us with your invoice or order details, photographs and a description of the installation and use. We will discuss the next steps; please contact us before arranging a return.

Can you provide technical reports or insurance documentation?

Tell us what your project requires. We can identify the technical information available for the selected configuration; a demonstration video is not a substitute for a test report. Business insurance documentation is available on request—see About Us. Our business liability cover is not flood insurance for your property.

Still have a question?
